Naveen Trehan and healthcare outsourcing are now almost synonymous. In fact, it could not have been without Trehan's efforts, now CEO Globerian, for healthcare outsourcing to get the recognition that it has today in the BPO industry. If it hadn't been for him, this industry would have taken a few more years to be recognised as a specialized sector, something much more than mere transcription. Trehan is one of the pioneers of healthcare outsourcing industry in India.
With so much to his credit, flourishing businesses in New York and India and a happy personal and professional life, he could have opted to live in New York. But Trehan is not one to sit and watch, he loves to be in the thick of things. Trehan's lifestyle can be easily summarized in one phrase, 'Simple living and high thinking'. Whatever he has today, he has earned it.
After graduation from Sri Ram College of Commerce, New Delhi he went to London for higher studies and graduated from the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales. Trehan worked with Arthur Andersen and later shifted to Price Waterhouse, where he continued for the next six years. Trehan says,"I always wanted to be an entrepreneur." The entrepreneurial bug kept nagging him till he chucked up everything to start an onshoring firm in New York, 'MD Revenues", in 1986. This later established as a successful medical billing company in the United States. This was just the beginning.
When asked, "Why Healthcare?" Answers Trehan, "It was a natural decision. My brother Dr Naresh Trehan, leading cardiac surgeon, was also in New York at the time and more so because my social circle and contacts included many well-known physicians and hospitals in New York." India was also a natural destination for him although a never planned one, since in the late 90s Indian outsourcing industry was also witnessing a boom, if not in the healthcare sector, but definitely in finance and accounting sectors. So it "was like homecoming" for Trehan. This was the year when 'MDR' was born to work as a back-office for MD Revenues in the US. It was early 1999. Now it was time to look Indiaward and the healthcare industry was the target.
With his rich business experience comprising 12-13 years in New York in the specialized healthcare sector, Trehan knew the industry in and out. "It was not difficult to establish my business in India, for it is my home country. But yes the regulations and compliances were a bit of an issue earlier," says Trehan. Establishing MDR was not so difficult. Later, in 2001, it was bought over by Alpha Thought International, a Chicago-based medical billing firm which had big plans to acquire companies in healthcare and expand. Although Trehan stayed with them to settle the business even after the acquisition, they could not manage it properly. Since MDR was Trehan's brainchild, he could not bear to see all his efforts going down the drain. He proposed to buy it back on his terms. This included the company along with the clients and the 100 trained workforce. He, of course, succeeded.
In 2004, Globerian was born. It was a new and finer version of MDR. Starting from the 100 odd employees, Trehan now has more than 800 employee base in Globerian and all this in just three years. Trehan not just established the company but was also the first trainer of the first pilot batch of the process. Globerian became a subsidiary of MediConnect Global Inc in 2006. For Trehan his business is a labour of love and he has harnessed his soul to it. Now though he divides his time between New York and India, Trehan is always available to his employees and associates.
But what keeps him going? "It's the momentum," says Trehan. The thrust and push to achieve the goal and not to get knocked down in the rat race gives him the strength to stay ahead. Trehan feels that too many people jump onto the bandwagon and ruin the market. That is the time “you need to emerge as a winner." Trehan finds this intriguing and challenging.
In all his meetings with his company employees, Trehan always mentions his single ideology. "He wants to see the company make profits but only by making his employees happy and satisfied with the culture of the company. His wife too assists in his work. He makes it a point to spend time with his employees and address their grievances, personal or professional. Trehan tries to keep in touch with each worker individually, not by calling them to his office, but by going up to their workstations and chatting them up. Trehan adds, "It gives me pleasure to work in my country. On a personal level it's very motivating for me."
Although his home is still in the US, a part of his heart is in India. He loves playing golf and skiing and grabs time to catch up with Hindi flicks while on board. His all time favourite is 'The Godfather'. He is fond of reading as well. Trehan has two daughters, the elder is married and the younger one is studying in a dental college. He does take time off for social engagements at times. His home still is in the US but most of the time he is traveling. Asked how he balances life with so much of traveling and there comes the simple and humble reply, "I still have to figure it out." However it is his cherished dream to establish a home in India.
He plans to expand Globerian to Tier I and II cities by the end of next year. Also, the company is looking toward increasing employee strength.
It's amazing that a man who has such a busy and hectic schedule, still finds life calm and stress free. He says, "It is just the hype and sounds worse than it is." It is a simple life. And how does he find his oasis of peace: Exercise and meditation once a day keep him cool. |
